Also known as Bhut Jolokia, this pepper from India was only first introduced to the western world sometime around 2000, though it had been growing around India for centuries. It was the first pepper to report a Scoville heat rating over 1 million, which was officially verified by Guiness in 2007. This made it the hottest known pepper in the world at the time. It can be argued that the Ghost pepper started the super-hot pepper craze
