About: Carnivorous plants inhabit low nutrient habitats in the wild. The plants rely on their traps to catch animal (mostly arthropod) prey, which they then digest and use to grow. These plants are easy to maintain at home in a bog garden or pot so long as attention is given to replicating their natural environment. High amounts of fertilizers or minerals in the water supply can kill these plants. The ideal soil is a combination of peat moss, sand, and sphagnum moss. Set the pots in a shallow saucer of rainwater or distilled water and never fertilize. These native carnivores are winter hardy if the pot is protected from harsh freezes by either burying it in the ground outside or placing it inside an unheated garage or shed for the winter.

The available plants are tissue cultured in the conservation laboratory at the Toledo Zoo!
